This is the second annual edition of FH® Healthcare Indicators and the FH® Medical Price Index, two resources developed by FAIR Health to provide clarity in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. Drawing on the independent nonprofit’s national database of billions of privately insured healthcare claims—the largest in the country—these two resources apply different approaches to illuminate different aspects of the national healthcare sector.

Following its series of three white papers on the national opioid crisis, FAIR Health, a national, independent, nonprofit organization, studied how regions and states across the country differ in the medical procedures used to treat opioid abuse and dependence. Drawing on its database of billions of privately billed healthcare claims, FAIR Health analyzed, for the recent year 2017, the top 10 procedure codes associated with opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses by utilization and aggregate cost in each US census region (Northeast, Midwest, South, West); five types of such opioid-related codes by state (behavioral health, medication-assisted treatment, inpatient treatment, outpatient rehabilitative services, emergency department visits); and the top five opioid-related codes by utilization and cost in each state.

Food allergy is a growing national health problem, affecting both children and adults. It is increasing in prevalence and its most dangerous consequence—the severe, potentially fatal reaction called anaphylaxis—is becoming more common. This analysis reports trends and patterns related to the extent and impact of food allergy and anaphylactic food reaction using data from FAIR Health, a national, independent, nonprofit organization that emphasizes transparency in healthcare costs and health insurance information.
